As a Houston Birth Photographer, I get to witness countless birth stories and no two are the same. Today I’m sharing the birth of Baby B, a birth that left both her parents and me in a state of shock!

Baby Photography Houston | Tomball Regional Hospital Birth Story

Baby B’s birth story started at about 7am when I first got a call from her mother, Michaelanne. Mom said she was having contractions and that she would let me know when she was on the way to the hospital. At around 8:45am, she called and said they were on their way. We planned for her to call me as soon as she found how how dilated she was so that I could figure out what time to arrive. Just a few minutes later, at 9:09am, she texted me to let me know she was having a ton of pressure and that she thought the was further along than 6cm. As soon as I heard the word “pressure” I knew I needed to be on my way. After all, Michaelanne has three other children so she wasn’t knew to the birth process.

We touched base at 9:14am, just as she was almost arriving at the hospital, and I was about half way there. At this point, Michaelanne was thinking that she still had some time left before the delivery but she promised to keep me updated. Little did we know, Baby B had other plans! At 9:40am, I texted Michaelanne again to let her know I was at the hospital checking in. I was so excited to capture yet another birth story for my sweet clients, but a few minutes after I arrived, Michaelanne’s husband Brett called to tell me that she had already delivered! We were all in such a state of shock! Michaelanne had arrived at the hospital at 9:20am and delivered Baby B just nine  minutes after she arrived at 9:29am! Talk about a close call! Here is a recap of my time with this family of six!

I love this picture of a napkin with Baby B’s stats on it.  We had to take a picture of it because everyone thought it was crazy that the birth happened so fast that they had nothing to write the little guy’s measurements on. A napkin would have to do for the time being!

After the delivery, I gave Michaelanne and Brett some time to get adjusted to what had just happened before beginning to document all the special moments that followed this shockingly fast delivery. Some of my favorite images included the precious moments with mom and dad, getting weighed, and meeting his three adorable sisters! Needless to say, it was quite a morning that I got to share with this beautiful family of six! Everything happened so fast and I know it probably seems like a bit of a blur for this family. Thankfully, they will be able to look back and remember all the emotions and special moments of the day each time they view these images.

This is by far one of my favorite images from this collection. I love that some day, Baby B will be able to see just how excited his big sisters were to meet him and welcome him into the family.

I am SO excited to share this birth story with you all today! My first time working with the M family was when I captured Kirsten’s maternity photos while she was pregnant with her first baby, a little girl. I then got to capture the birth of Kirsten and Justin’s first born, C, as well as her newborn photos, and it was such a pleasure getting to know this family throughout the process. Needless to say, I was thrilled when Kirsten reached out to see if I was available to document the arrival of baby #2!

Of course, I wanted more than anything to be there to document another milestone for this family, but I knew it would be hard because the M family had recently moved to San Antonio. Kirsten and I talked a lot about the logistics involved in having me come to photograph a birth in San Antonio but, after careful consideration, we decided that as long as I started driving as soon as Kirsten went into labor, our plan could actually work!

On the day of Baby E’s birth, I made sure I was there as soon as possible. Kirsten and Justin figured that Kirsten would be around 6cm dilated once she was checked, but she surprised us all when she was only at 3cm. That was when we realized it might be a long day. Justin was the one who called it when he said the birth would be at around 3:30pm. Sure enough, 3:30pm was when she was fully dilated and ready to deliver. Today I’m honored to share their birth story with you, not only in the images that follow but also in a fusion video at the end of this post that I know you will enjoy!

This moment! It’s a quiet moment, often overlooked, but always one of my favorites. It’s the anticipation of a baby’s arrival and it’s full of so much emotion – excitement, nervousness, joy, you name it. Having two children of my own, I remember this moment well and I love capturing it for my expecting mamas.

I also love to capture all the details that parents are sure to either not notice or soon forget that are such a big part of every birth story.

Like I said, it was a long day. Baby E made us wait to long that we had plenty of time to chat, relax, and update everyone on the process.

I love that I even had a chance to grab this adorable photo of mom and dad just a short while before Baby E’s birth. Some day he will get to see just how excited his parents were to welcome him into this world.

Here he is, finally! And here are those images that I absolutely love to capture during births:

I always try to have parents guess the weight of the baby before the official weight is announced. Mom guessed 7lbs. and dad guessed 8lbs. but something told me he was bigger than that. Sure enough, when they converted the weight and announced a weight of 9.4lbs., they were shocked! We were all in awe of how big he was, as they totally were’t expecting that.

Kirsten and Justin had brought in baseballs to get Baby E’s footprints put on them but who would’ve known how tricky it would be! Luckily, Kirsten had the nicest nurse and she did a great job of getting the footprints onto baby’s first baseballs.

Baby’s grandparents and sister, C, were waiting downstairs to meet their newest family member. I couldn’t wait to capture Claire’s reaction to seeing her little brother!

Love this image – the first official one of this new family of four!

Family portrait after birth of newborn baby

After spending some time photographing Baby E with all the family members who were there to welcome him, I got this gem of a photo of the entire welcoming committee. Look at those faces!! I just love all the joy in this one image. And a little bit of shock, too, because, well, C is still getting used to the idea of a new little brother. But how adorable is she?! I was so excited to be reunited with her and give her a big hug. It’s crazy because once she saw her brother and got down on the ground, she came right to me, put her hands up and gave me a huge hug. She let me hold her for quite a while and my heart almost melted.

Welcoming newborn boy into a new family

Before my time with this family came to an end, Kirsten suggested that we get an image of me with her two babies. I’m so glad she thought of it! It was a beautiful experience going through maternity, birth, and newborn images with this family for their very first baby, but to go through the experience again with them as they welcomed their second child into this world is just amazing. I have gotten to form such a unique bond with them and I’m so incredibly thankful for that. I know I won’t get to see the M family very often now that they live in San Antonio but they will always hold such a special place in my heart. This next image of me with both C and E speaks mountains for how I feel about capturing the birth of a newborn. Birth photography is so much more than taking pictures of a mother in labor and I’m so lucky to be able to capture little miracles like these that grow in their mommy’s body, brought into this world by the grace of God. To think that it’s me who gets the honor of being there to capture every little second of it is just overwhelming to me…. I love my job!

You may remember today’s featured family from their recent birth photography session at Texas Children’s Hospital. Well, after I got to spend some wonderful moments with them with the birth of Baby H, I had the honor of having them in my studio just last month! Documenting the birth of this little girl was an amazing experience that I loved being a part of but I have to say that seeing her again with her family just confirms why I love what I do. Capturing milestones for families like I did for the C family just renews my love of birth and newborn photography. Join me as I walk you through my time with Kristen, Steven, Big Brother S and Baby Girl H.

Newborn Photography Houston Studio Session

Babies are always unpredictable so I never quite know which pose I’ll start my newborn sessions with. Little H wasn’t super sleepy when we began her session so we opted to wrap her up tightly while she settled into a deep sleep. She loved it!

I always love documenting my tiniest clients in this next pose because it shows their features off perfectly and they always look so tiny in timeless images like this one.

Here’s the money shot, ha! You never know how cooperative older siblings are going to be for family photos but this little guy did great! He even smiled for the photo – I considered that a huge win!

Mama brought this beautiful bonnet to incorporate in the session and it looked adorable on Baby H. It has such a pretty vintage look to it!

Big brother and little sister photos like this one always have a way of melting my heart. I know mom and dad are going to treasure this one so much!

This next image reminds me of this quote by Clare Boothe Luce:

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

It’s the perfect example of how lovely just a simple image of a baby can be.

But a balance between simple set-ups and delicate, girly ones is always a good idea =)

This next image almost didn’t happen! I told mom we could try to capture another image of the baby with her big brother while she was sound asleep. He crawled up to the baby, gave her a quick kiss, and he was gone before I could get a second shot. Luckily, I managed to capture this priceless image:

Finally, because one can never get enough of sweet little newborns like this one, here are a couple more versions of some of my favorite set-ups and poses from the session:

Something I love about being a Houston Newborn Photographer is the fact that I get to meet many other photographers from our local photography groups. It is so nice to connect with like-minded creatives in my area. I met Amanda after she moved to our area and we connected in a local photography group. I was so honored when she reached out to me to capture her with her new baby girl on her 10th day of life! And when she told me that she loved purple, I knew exactly how I was going to style the session of Baby J. I think you’re going to love a peek into this sweet session – enjoy!

Newborn Photographer Houston Photos

One of the set-ups I prepared for Baby J’s newborn session included this textured purple blanket. I thought it would be lovely to do some natural posing on it and it was perfect! I love incorporating poses like this one to help parents remember scenes from everyday life with their new baby.

For our second set-up I incorporated some of my favorite peach accessories. I love how this color complements the purple so well and the wooden floor brings it all together.

This next image just melts my heart. I love how this pose shows off all of baby’s little details from her beautiful little face to her adorable little feet!

And now for the gorgeous mama with her baby girl! Aren’t they stunning?

Those little hands! I love getting them so perfectly soft and relaxed. Doesn’t she look so cozy in this image?

If you’ve been following along on my blog for a while, you know I absolutely love capturing close-ups of my newborn clients. Having seen how fast my own two little ones have grown, I know how important it is to have images like these next ones to remember a baby’s cute little features. Because they’re only this little for a short time!

My hope is that when mama sees this image years from now, it’ll take her back to this special time in her baby’s life and allow her to re-live how it felt to become a mother.

I am in love with how this entire collection turned out but this next image is one of my favorites. I just love how peaceful she looks!

Of course, I had to make sure I showed off those cheeks as best as I could! Because everyone just loves baby cheeks!

Amanda, thank you for allowing me to capture this amazing time in your life! It was a such a pleasure working with you and your little girl. May you always remember the beauty of motherhood. I look forward to following along on your journey in being both a photographer and mama!
